PATTERN 2: WIN POSSESSION FROM A SIDE-LINE KICK
What do I need to set up this exercise?
Football, cones and goalposts
What will exercise layout look like?
See below
How do I execute this exercise?
• Set up with six forwards and no defenders. Please
note, this pattern can be used in multiple areas of
the pitch but this example will focus specifically
on securing the ball from a side-line kick in the
attacking area of the pitch.
• A call or signal is agreed by the players prior to the
execution of this play.
• Player G commences the pattern by pre-agreed
signal.
• Player A runs as fast as they can towards the kicker
as if they are looking for the ball.
• At the same time, Player B makes an angled run
towards the centre of the pitch.
• Player C enters the space left by Player A and
receives the ball from Player G. Player C can kick
for a score if this option is possible as dependant on
distance from goals etc.
• All the other players (D, E and F) make dummy runs
with intent to cones 20m away
• Conduct the pattern 5 times, rest, discuss and
complete again 5 more times with progressions.
Progressions:
• Conduct the pattern with no fumbling of the ball
• Assign a timeframe from time the ball is kicked to a
score
• Rotate the players
• Conduct pattern from the opposite side.
