COACHING CARD Patterns of Play www.ladiesgaelic.ie | WINTER 2021 | 63 A C D B PATTERN 2: What do I need to set up this exercise? Multiple footballs, cones and a goal What will exercise layout look like? See Below How do I execute this exercise? • Distance between the cones is dependent on age/ ability of the group you are coaching. Normally players at zone A are 50/55 m out from goals, Players at zone C are 40/45m from goals near the side-line while players at zone D start 10m from goals. • Footballs are placed at zone A. • Players at zone A run with pace with the ball to cone B, player does a 180 turn and off loads the ball to player coming from zone C. Player A, turns and continues to flush out her run and be a possible option for the player who will receive the ball from zone D. • Meanwhile, the player who received the ball from player A coming from zone C, gives a kick pass to player looking to receive the ball from zone D. • NOTE: Player coming from zone D does not run in a straight line towards the ball or player coming from zone C. She runs across the line and then checks her run, changes direction to receive ball around 'D' area of the pitch. Player who provides the pass from zone C continues her run outside the player who receives the ball. • Player D will make the decision based on where she receives the ball and positioning of her two teammates around her at that time. • She can either: • Kick for a score • Links up with players coming of the shoulder from both sides and set up a possible 3 v 1 on the goalkeeper with a possible 'back door' tap in goal. • Players coming off the shoulder should flush out their runs even if they don't get the ball. Duration: • 3 minutes What are we getting form these patterns? • Basic skill development – handpassing, kicking passing and shooting • Timing of runs • Communication • Different movement patterns – straight line running, change of direction What you might see in these patterns: • Lack of pace • Poor skill execution while on the run • Poor timing of runs • Fumbling of the ball
