www.ladiesgaelic.ie | SPRING 2019 | 43 MATCH in a minute "Being able to play counties from other provinces was a major plus. Westmeath got to play 12 counties in total. I found it very beneficial in order to gauge the level we were at, and it gives us a great platform to plan for the future. The LGFA organised the tournament very well. The hosts clubs were excellent, the attire for the match officials was very professional and the national anthem was an unforgettable moment." TOM CONLON, WESMTEATH Clockwise from Top Left: 1 Emma Tumelty of Westmeath in action. 2 Emer Fogarty of Westmeath in action against Sarah Heron of Derry. 3 Eabha Mullan of Derry in action against Aine Ditullio of Westmeath. 4 Kelly Burke of Westmeath lifts the cup with team-mates. 5 Emma Tumelty of Westmeath in action against Niamh McGlinchey, Caoimhe Dillon and Sarah Casey of Derry. 6 Emer Fogarty of Westmeath in action against Sarah Heron. 7 Emer Fogarty of Westmeath in action against Sarah Heron. 8 Kelly Burke of Westmeath lifts the cup Westmeath: E Temple, H Kiernan, K Burke (C), N McKenna, T Coyne, N Sweeney, A Coogan, C Gaffney, T Foley, E Fogarty, A Ditullio, S Gorman, E Tumelty, L Seery, R McKenna WESTMEATH SUBS: C Kilmurray, G McGlynn, S Conlon, E Corcoran Ref: Garryowen McMahon (Mayo) Half-time: Westmeath 2-6 Derry 0-6 Full time: Westmeath 4-17 Derry 1-9 SCORE OF THE MATCH: Emma Tumelty was leading scorer for Westmeath in this All-Ireland Final, and she coolly found the net in the second half to restore a four-point lead for the Lake County, after Derry had cut the deficit to just a single point. TURNING POINT: That aforementioned goal from Tumelty was a massive score for Westmeath, and they kicked for home from there. The final scoreline might have flattered Westmeath, somewhat, but the oxygen from Tumelty's strike had the wind in their sails all the way to the final whistle. SUMMARY: A first-ever All-Ireland U14 title beckoned for the winners of this tie. Derry were C runners-up in 2015, while Westmeath lost out in the B Final in 2013. It was Westmeath's day as Emma Tumelty, Lisa Seery and Sadhbh Gorman sparkled in attack. Tumelty scored 1-7, Seery added 2-3 and Gorman collected 1-3, a combined haul of 4-13 from the deadly trio. Westmeath were six points up at the break but a spirited Derry outfit had the deficit back to just a single point early in the second half. Westmeath, however, upped the ante and crusied to a victory that flattered them slightly on the scoreboard. A famous victory for Westmeath but a significant boost for both counties to appear in an All-Ireland underage final.
