ladiesgaelic.ie // 11 STATS ANALYSIS OF TG4 SENIOR FINAL Volume 14 | Issue No 3 | PEIL Autumn Cork had a strong kickout record throughout the Championship. They only lost one kickout in their first game against Tipperary, this stat was repeated against Donegal in semi final. Dublin had a clear strategy for the Cork kickout. Throughout the game they pressed high and squeezed the cork defenders. On numbers alone it doesn't look too bad, Cork still only lost three of their own kickouts. The story however is the pressure they were under coming out of defense. Cork's first kickout provides a good example. Sinéad Aherne kicks a free and the entire Dublin forward unit push up (Picture 1). First by Carla Rowe and then by Aherne coming in and doubling up (picture 2). Aherne takes possession and Dublin go straight towards goal. While she kicks a point if she had popped it left to Nicole Owens or right to Carla Rowe Dublin would have created their first goal of opportunity of the game (picture 3). At the other end of the pitch Ciara Trant had options everywhere when she set up to take a kickout. Cork would have known they risked leaving themselves open at the back if they pushed up for the Dublin kickout (see Dublin's third goal coming from one of the few times they forced Trant to go long). The reality was however that sitting back gave Dublin repeated easy possession. Dublin were very effective at winning their own kickouts but on six separate occasions after Dublin gained primary possession from their kickout, they travelled the length of the field without any meaningful challenge from a Cork player and the attack resulted in a score. A quick solution might have been for Cork to press higher on the Dublin kickout. However, Carla Rowe's second goal came from doing exactly that. Cork commited more players forward, Dublin adapted and kicked long and found openings in the Cork defense. Capitalising on Opposition Errors. Another differenciator between the teams was Dublin's ruthlessness after a Cork wasted chance. Cork showed how adept they were at shooting from outside the scoring zone against the Donegal blanket defence in the semi final but against Dublin it just didn't happen. 5 of the Cork shots remained in play and Dublin scored from 3 of these. Of the other 2, one was saved for a Cork 45 and the other one resulted in another Dublin counter attack that only for a last minute interception would have likely resulted in another Dublin goal.
