50 | AUTUMN 2023 | www.ladiesgaelic.ie Football Skills & Movement COACHING CARD To assist with the efficiency of the circuit, please see below a few tips: • Send out a clip of the circuit in advance to the players so they have an idea of what is involved. • View the clip provided. • Ideally have two coaches specifically looking after marking the scores, one coach observing and commentating as the player moves through the circuit, while the other coach is marking the scores based on instruction from their fellow coach • One coach should be providing the demonstration of the circuit and may need to move through the circuit with the player to ensure they conduct the right actions. This may apply if conducting the circuit with younger age groups. • Have plenty footballs and place the footballs on the various stations prior to a player commencing the circuit. • Place helpers or players who are not doing the circuit at various sections of the circuit to help gather the footballs and place the footballs back in their positions • It is important players conduct the circuit on the move for as much as possible Follow Up • It is important every player receives feedback on how they got on and provided with advice on how they can improve. • Informing the players that you will be conducting the challenge again in a number of weeks will serve as a motivation to improve their skills and movement quality at home AS THE CLUB SEASON IS ENDING: Finishing off the season with a football skill and movement quality challenge may assist with ensuring the players keep on top of their football skills and movement quality during the off season. The football challenge and skills circuit supplied can be modified to suit the stage of the development of your players i.e., distances applied and size of the circuit THINGS TO OBSERVE: Skill execution • If a player misses an attempt, ask yourself why, for example is it because… • They lifted the head when kicking the ball • Did not follow through when kicking or hand passing the ball • Body positioning • Movement quality • When observing movement quality, observe the following… • Momentum when executing the skills – is there an efficient flow or do they break their • Momentum (stop) • Movement going through the ladders and poles – what is their body posture like i.e., • Do they keep head up, good arm action, good movement of the feet etc. • General movement around the circuit i.e., turning off both sides of the body.
