6 | SUMMER 2023 | www.ladiesgaelic.ie
On the weekend of June 16th – 18th I was
lucky to get the opportunity to travel over
to Santiago De Compostela to witness first
hand the great work being done in the region
to promote Ladies football. First up was a
workshop with a group of their players.
The group were a mixture of players from
the local club in Santiago and also some of
the players from the Galician team that are
heading to the GAA World Games this July
in Derry. It was a thoroughly enjoyable three
hours spent in their company and it was great
to see the enthusiasm these players have for
our sport.
As an added bonus on the trip, I got to visit
with one of the local schools where they have
introduced Gaelic Football to their pupils. This
was amazing to see how the coaches here are
working on the ground promoting a love for our
game amongst local children. I spoke at length
with Alexandre San Martin Costa, who is one
of the driving forces behind the spread of the
game in Galicia.
Their plans over the coming months and
years include such things as summer camps
and spreading the coaching into more schools
in the area. There should be huge praise given
to everyone in Galicia for the promotion of our
games. I hopefully look forward to returning
again over the coming years.
