EIMÍLE GAVIN GALWAY CLAREGALWAY 25 EDUCATION WORKER NAME: COUNTY: FOOTBALL CLUB: AGE: JOB: GUESS WHAT I DO EIMÍLE GAVIN What is your current role: I am an education worker and that is in the STAR Project, which stands for supporting Travellers and Roma. We are jointly funded by TUSLA, the Department of Education, and the Department of Justice. Tell me about your job: The main thing in my job is I support Traveller and Roma students to reach their full potential. This is done by supporting their parents, mentoring the students, creating projects. So a lot of our work is spent really trying to make education as accessible and enjoyable for the Traveller and Roma communities. Some examples of projects are youth clubs, homework clubs, outdoor education programmes. It's kind of based on needs and what the students want to do themselves. How did you get into your job?: So, three years ago I was in my undergraduate, which was Social Science in University of Galway. And then through my work placement that I had there, I got a job in a very similar youth programme here in Tuam. That was a part-time job. Then this job came up, a full-time position, and I applied for it. I got it through experience and networking that I had made. It was the school completion programme. Where are you based with your role?: We're based in our host organisation in the Western Traveller Intercultural Development Centre and that is a community development organisation in Tuam, County Galway. What are the best things about your job?: It's not boring, I love my job. And the best thing about my job is definitely the people I get to work with and the relationships I get to build. And it's a very rewarding job. So when you see people reach their goals in life with your support, it's very valuable. Would you recommend it to budding footballers?: Yeah, 100 percent, I would recommend this job. It is a very positive place to work. You can make a real difference and impact on people at a crucial time in their lives. There are other footballers in similar roles too, my colleague Erin Conway won an All- Ireland Junior Competition a few years ago and we do work closely with schools and there are a lot of teachers there that are footballers. www.ladiesgaelic.ie | AUTUMN 2022 | 39
