www.ladiesgaelic.ie | SPRING 2022 | 45 PLAYER 4 Coaches survey Players are at the centre of the Player Development Programme, how will they benefit from being involved? First and foremost, it will help provide some guide rails to help their skills development. We are providing a common understanding of what skills need to be developed in order to improve to be their best. We are asking girls to focus on doing their warm-ups, cool-downs, dynamic and static stretching with an obligation for self-care and prevention of injury. So much so, the girls are now doing their own warm-up and cool-down drills without coaches in groups of ten. As the PDP is not focused on 'making the county panel at all costs', the mood is not adversarial or competitive, it is providing the space to have fun, make new friendships across the county and ultimate improve the bond between the group. How can the Player Development Programme benefit your county for the future? One swallow does not make a summer! We need to continue with the programme for a number of years, to continue with these U13s through to U17s, to reinforce the education and development of the girls, and maybe more importantly the coach's development. We need to create a consistency of coaching in the clubs to help continue the skills development of girls all year round, and not just for the eight days of PDP. The ultimate goal is to produce footballers to compete to the best of their ability at the highest level. If there was one tip you would give another county to ensure they have a successful Player Development Programme, what would it be? Don't reinvent the Wheel! Contact LGFA and they will connect with your PDP coordinator, who will give a run through of the PDP, talk to them, take their PDP template and tailor the plan for your county and get going. 1.
