NEWS & SHORTS www.ladiesgaelic.ie | SPRING 2022 | 5 The Greatest Gift "The Greatest Gift a girl can get is a love of sport. The greatest gift a parent can give is the understanding to make it happen." To mark International Women's Day 2022, the Ladies Gaelic Football Association introduced the first in a series of specially-commissioned videos focusing on the vital roles that parents and guardians can play in the lives of players. 'The Greatest Gift' video series has been funded by Sport Ireland Special Project funding and shines a light on the powerful and positive impact that parents and guardians can have as players make the journey from their fledgling steps as young girls to adult stars. On International Women's Day, the LGFA saluted all of the wonderful parents and guardians of our members striving to be the very best that they can be as players – and who show such wonderful support. The campaign features a four-part video series filmed at Donaghmore-Ashbourne club in Meath and also two eBooks – one aimed at parents of teenage girls and the other at parents of younger girls. The Greatest Gift Be There - YouTube #LGFAHero Each month in 2022, the LGFA is sharing a video that shines a light on a variety of people who help make the Association tick – week in and week out! Within the LGFA, there is a place for everyone and it is the heroes of today who will inspire the next generation. This project is funded by Sport Ireland's Women in Sport department and aims to lift the lid on some incredible women who are pushing the Association into a new era. Let yourself be inspired by great women and share their stories. Experienced players are in a special place, as role models to fit that role. Experienced players need help to perfect coaching skills and to look and see the game and its players in a different light. LGFA are providing an excellent service by helping experienced players transfer to the coaching role. This programme will increase the number of ladies coaching in clubs and in time will improve participation and performance levels.' Liam Moggan. The fifth Inter-county Level 1 Coaching Programme for current or past inter-county players took place in January. This programme is designed for experienced Inter-County players who have demonstrated an interest in progressing their coaching skills. It acknowledges the many years players have invested in the sport, it values the coaching experiences they have received over time and arouses an interest to improve their coaching skills further. The assimilation process also increases the number of women who can potentially progress to the complete LGFA Level Two coach education course. The day was facilitated by Liam Moggan, formerly of Coaching Ireland, and LGFA National Development Officer and Coach Developer William Harmon. This year the programme attracted many former Inter-county greats, namely Angela Walsh (Cork), Claire Egan (Mayo), Irene Munnelly (Meath), Jacqui Mulligan (Sligo), Jennifer Rogers (Westmeath), current Carlow star Nicole Hanley and Irish International Soccer player and Galway native Meabh de Burca. LGFA President Mícheál Naughton highlighted the importance of the programme in the LGFA coach education pathway stating: 'This LGFA Inter County Level 1 Coaching Programme for experienced players provides players with a great opportunity to fast track their coaching careers. We want to see more of our great players progress through to the top level of coaching. They have amassed so much knowledge during their time as players that will be of enormous benefit to young players getting involved in the game. We hope to see players and former players take advantage of this opportunity to accelerate through the coaching grades and progress right to the top of our sport.' We look forward to supporting these aspiring coaches as they continue their coaching journeys.
