NEWS & SHORTS www.ladiesgaelic.ie | SPRING 2022 | 9 Anti Doping Guidelines: Your Body, Your Responsibility LGFA is a member of WADA, which means that our players are governed by WADA Antidoping regulations. A fundamental priniciple to remember is that of STRICT LIABILITY. As an athlete, it is your body and therefore your responsibility to ensure you are aware of prohibited substances. The Prohibited List The Prohibited List sets out the substances and methods prohibited in sport. Read our summary of major changes to the 2022 Prohibited List https:// www.sportireland.ie/anti-doping/athlete-zone/ Some substances and methods are prohibited at all times and others are only prohibited in-competition or only prohibited in particular sports. It does not matter when you take a substance, if it is prohibited in- competition and it is found in your system, you may face a ban. Checking Medications Athletes must check the status of all medication before consumption. That includes both over-the-counter and prescription medication. For more on checking medications purchased in Ireland or in the UK, please check: www.sportireland.ie/anti-doping/athlete-zone Supplements Sports foods and supplements are categories of nutritional products that are marketed to athletes that claim to enhance athletic performance (ACSM 2016). They are generally categorised according to their main mode of action, which may be to increase strength and power, improve energy and endurance or enhance recovery after exercise. Sports foods and supplements may contain banned substances. This could result in a positive test for an athlete. What are the risks associated with Supplements? • NOT REGULATED LIKE MEDICINES • LABELS PROVIDE NO GUARANTEE OF THE PRODUCT CONTENTS • CROSS CONTAMINATION IN THE PRODUCTION PROCES To minimise the risks, athletes must: • Seek advice from a qualified sports nutrition professional • Conduct a thorough internet search of the product you intend to take • Research the name of the product and the ingredients listed • Check the product website for any warnings • Keep evidence of all research conducted • Screenshots of research should be saved and backed up • Only use batch tested products from a reliable source such as Informed Sport (sport.wetestyoutrust.com) For any LGFA Anti Doping queries, please contact Aislinn Harkin : Aislinn.Harkin@LGFA.ie Injury Prevention for Gaelic4Mothers&Others To keep a car on the road, or indeed to get one back on the road, an owner must maintain continuous maintenance through regular servicing and checks. Without servicing, a car will inevitably begin to give you a bit of trouble! In a sporting context, our bodies are our vehicles. We must look after our bodies with regular maintenance and indeed prepare it them any journeys they may go on. For some Gaelic4Mothers&Others participants, this may be their maiden sporting voyage or they may be getting back to the road after an extended hiatus. Much like the car, we cannot, or should not, expect our bodies to function seamlessly without prior preparation or "break down" prevention. The Gaelic4Mothers&Others 'Injury Prevention Series' is designed to be that pre-journey service that will allow participants to confidently embark on their Gaelic4Mothers&Others voyage and all the craic, physical activity, and social life that the programme has to offer. The series caters for beginner and seasoned players and should be utilised in the weeks leading up the commencement of the programme in your club. Mobility, home strength, and landing mechanics all contribute to a comprehensive library of videos that will assist in giving a better and more rounded experience for our participants that, will, help keep the medical mechanics away and keep the fine-tuned vehicle on the road. Pseudoephedrine is prohibited in-competition at uri- nary concentrations >150mcg/ml. Pseudoephedrine is found in many over the counter medicines avail- able in pharmacies including many multi-ingredient products used as cough and cold remedies, hayfever and decongestant treatments. Athletes should stop taking any pseudoephedrine containing products at least 24 hours before competition. BE PARTICULARLY MINDFUL OF SOME COLD AND FLU MEDICATION WHICH MAY CONTAIN PSEUDOEPHEDRINE.
