www.ladiesgaelic.ie | SUMMER 2021 | 65 KICKING FOR SCORES COACHING CARD ACTIVITY 1 What do I need to set up this exercise? • Multiple footballs and cones How do I execute this activity? • Set up two stations on the left and right side of the goal posts (as shown in the diagram) about 25m out. Cones are approx. 10m apart. • Players divide up evenly and line up behind cones A and B. The coach or assistant coach stands on cone C. • For the activity to be efficient, ensure you have plenty of footballs at cone A and a person behind the goals to retrieve the footballs • Players at come A have a ball in hand. On the coach's signal, player A runs at pace towards cone C and handpasses the ball to the coach. • Player at cone B times her run and loops around the coach at cone C, collects a pass from the coach and shoots for a score without breaking her stride. • Players keep rotating between cones A and B. • Players conduct same activity on opposite side of the goals but this time using the left side of the body. • Important to have one or two assistants behind the goals to gather footballs and kick back to station to ensure flow. Duration: • Do three rounds at each station for 2 minutes. • Coach provides feedback on kicking technique as players rest What are we getting form this activity? • Develop technique i.e., handpass into chest and hook kick • Use of four steps and bounce where appropriate • Moving ball at pace • Timing of runs and promotion of looping runs What you might see: • Poor execution of handpass to the chest which in turn will have knock on affect for player timing their run • Timing of runs could be too late or early • Poor execution of scores due to inefficient kicking technique • Slow pace.
