Grab Your Whistle Referee Academy 2020/2021 The Ladies Gaelic Football Association is delighted to continue year 2 of the Grab Your Whistle Referee Academy for aspiring referees, who are currently officials in their counties. This is an initiative welcoming referees from all counties and we have representatives from four provinces, with 15 participants in total. Currently, the academy is delivered online and we have completed four interactive modules. Participants have covered goal- setting, officiating style, knowing your cards, the importance of mental preparation and teamwork. The participants have completed their linesperson training and look forward to practical experience on the line during the 2021 Lidl National Football League as their next step. The programme had to adapt this year with the limited amount of practical experience we could offer the referees, so to keep everyone engaged, we delivered a referee academy mini-series. These were three online webinars with LGFA national referees to talk about specific areas of interest to the participants. We had Maggie Farrelly, who shared her referee journey with us and talked about balancing playing and being a referee, the importance of teamwork, preparation and fitness requirements. We were then joined by Shane Curley to discuss communication with side-line/ coaches and players, and physical fitness for referees sharing tips on how he gets fits for the season. Finishing off the series, we had Stephen McNulty talking about his experience around game management when you are on your own. Stephen provided tips on on how to note players, keep the score and time management. The mini-series has been a huge success and these were all just 45 minutes in duration, set up as informal presentations with so much learning and points to note. We would like to thank Maggie, Shane and Stephen for giving up their time to develop the next generation of referees. We all look forward to the next stage of the Grab Your Whistle Referee Academy activity in the months ahead of us.
