28 | SUMMER 2020 | www.ladiesgaelic.ie YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH T he Ladies Gaelic Football Association teamed up with Lidl Ireland and Jigsaw to roll out five days of activity focusing on Positive Youth Mental Health from Monday 1st to Friday 5th June. As everyone was aware, many of our members across the country were due to begin their Leaving Certificate or Junior Certificate, GCSE or A Level exams that week and they, with many other of our young players, were having to deal with added stress and pressure during these unprecedented times. Sport plays a crucial outlet for young people's positive mental health and adds to the 'Be Active' message utilised by Jigsaw as part of their 5-a-day for positive mental health. The LGFA, in partnership with Lidl and Jigsaw, outlined each of these 5 key messages throughout our 'Be Positive' Week and we asked all of our members to get involved and support our young members across the country, and to assist our young members to help themselves also. So what happened during the week from 1st-5th June? We had a video from one of the Lidl One Good Club ambassadors to upload every day, dealing with one of the Jigsaw 5 a day for positive mental health themes. These videos contained details of what the message means and sample activities a youth could complete to assist with their mental health. The ambassadors called on youths to upload their messages using the #SeriousSupport to show what they were doing on that day to match the theme. They called on other players and coaches across the country to share what they were doing to support positive mental health with their young players. #SeriousSupport for Youth Mental Health What theme was the focus for each day? • Monday – Keep Learning – Emer Gallagher (Donegal) • Tuesday – Take Notice – Nicola Ward (Galway) • Wednesday – Keep Active – Caoimhe McGrath (Waterford) • Thursday – Connect – Carla Rowe (Dublin) • Friday – Give – Emer Gallagher (Donegal) Full details of this initiative are available at ladiesgaelic.ie/learn/be-positive-with-5-a-day/ In 2018, Lidl Ireland partnered with Jigsaw, pledging to raise €1million and grow national awareness of youth mental health. Through this partnership, Lidl Ireland have empowered communities with initiatives including "One Good School" and "One Good Club", by advancing the mental health of young people and developing supportive communities nationwide. Brought to you in partnership with our official retail partner, Lidl Ireland, and their charity partner, Jigsaw – The National Centre for Youth Mental Health.
