Report & Stats MATCH 40 | WINTER 2019 | www.ladiesgaelic.ie DIVISION 1: University of Limerick 3-10 v Dublin City University 1-07 Cork's Eimear Scally bagged 1-6, as UL claimed the Gourmet Food Parlour Ladies HEC Football Division 1 title, with a convincing win over DCU. University of Limerick proved to be the more clinical outfit in the opening half, and led by 1-1 to 0-0 after just four minutes, with Kerry duo Hannah O'Donoghue netting a goal, before her Kingdom colleague Niamh O'Connor pushed UL four points clear. DCU weren't without their early scoring chances, but the usually accurate Aishling Moloney mis-fired in the opening minutes, before opening her side's tally with an eighth minute pointed free. The Tipperary ace finished with five of DCU's points, including three of their four first half scores. Gourmet Food Parlour Player of the Match' Scally netted UL's second goal before the break, as they claimed a 2-6 to 0-4 interval lead. UL captain Shauna Howley grabbed her side's third goal on the restart, and despite DCU's best efforts they never fully got to grips with this game. DCU did earn a consolation goal in the 61st minute goal from substitute Roisin McGovern, but UL were firmly in control. Scorers for UL: Eimear Scally 1-6 (4f); Hannah O'Donoghue, Shauna Howley 1-0 each; Fiadhna Tagney 0-2; Niamh O'Connor, Ailbhe Davoren 0-1 each. TU Dublin, City Centre (formerly DIT) claimed their first GFP Division 2 Ladies HEC title, following a hard earned two- point win in Stradbally. This was an epic encounter, full of great running, saves, defending and scores. There wasn't even a minute on the board, before Caoimhe O'Connor popped over the first point for TUD. MICL didn't get off the mark until the eighth minute with a point from Aisling Healy. TUD had dominated possession early on, but failed to make it count as MICL settled and quickly added further points from Aisling Healy and Aoife Murray to move ahead by the ninth minute. Stacey Grimes was a live-wire for TUD and added some fine points to put them ahead, but MICL found the net on 19th minute, thanks to an Aisling Healy goal. Grainne Regan grabbed MICL's second goal on 27 minutes, but TUD rallied as Rachael Brennan found the net, with MICL leading by 2-4 to 1-5 at the break. Healy and O'Connor swapped points early on the restart, before Grimes levelled matters with a brace of pointed frees. MICL keeper Laura Brennan pulled off some stunning saves throughout, including denying Niamh Keenaghan twice in the 38th minute. TUD continued to take their points, and although Saoirse Moore netted for MICL on 48 minutes, TUD held firm despite a number of misses in the final quarter. After the game, LGFA National Development Officer Con Moynihan presented the Cup to TUD captain Sarah McCabe from Knockbride, Co. Cavan. The Gourmet Food Parlour Player of the Match award went to Mary Immaculate College goalkeeper Laura Brennan from Hollymount, Co. Mayo. DIVISION 3: Garda College 2-05 V IT Tralee 0-10 Goals were key for Garda College as they claimed GFP Division 3 Ladies Football HEC League silverware. Catriona Murray and Sheila Brady found the net either side of half time, in a game which was well balanced early on. IT Tralee led by 0-4 to 0-3 at the end of the first quarter, but could have trailed at this stage but for a fine save by their keeper Emma Glynn. IT Tralee pushed four points clear, but Garda College mounted a comeback, with Murray finding the net to cut the gap to a point at the break. Garda College were hungry and netted for the second time five minutes after the restart. Brady added a point, but Garda College were left sweating as they failed to score from the 47th minute until the end. Áine Nash worked hard to cut the gap for IT Tralee, but Garda College held on by the minimum. Garda College captain Kellie Kearney received the Cup from Ladies HEC Secretary DJ Collins, while she also picked up the Gourmet Food Parlour Player of the Match award. DIVISION 4: Mary Immaculate College Limerick (2) 4-13, Letterkenny IT 3-13. Mary Immaculate College's second team put the pain of last year's Division 4 final loss to to UCD 3 behind them, to deliver Division 4 silverware at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence. In the end, just a goal separated the sides, following a keenly- contested encounter.
