Playing with the wind at their backs Doireann O'Sullivan had 0-2 on the scoreboard from her first two touches of the ball inside 100 seconds of the throw in. Mourneabbey were happy to get O'Sullivan on the ball anywhere at all even pulling her out to midfield and as far as defence at times. On the other hand Ring was left inside on a cold windy evening. By the end of the first half O'Sullivan had felt the weight of the ball 17 times in open play everywhere from giving the pass which set up the goal right back to getting on ball inside her own half back line. Every player likes to get hands on the ball early and allowing O'Sullivan that free roaming role allowed her that chance to build confidence. As a result she would finish the half with 4 shots on goal from play, kicking three points in the process. On the other hand Foxrock-Cabinteely persisted with leaving Ring isolated inside even when they weren't getting ball anywhere near her. While Hannah O'Neill and Amy Connolly were sent back to help the defensive effort (and in the meantime get on ball) Ring was left up top with the result she would only touch the ball 3 times in play during the first 30 minutes. Although it must be remembered she was the one to flick the ball past the Mourneabbey defence in the lead up to the free which would ultimately result in Foxrock-Cabinteely's only goal. The second half followed a similar pattern although with the breeze the Dublin outfit were at least able to get the ball to their inside forward a little more often with Ring finishing the second half with 5 possessions plus 4 kicks at goal from frees. At the other end of the pitch O'Sullivan picked up even more ball, slowing the tempo of the game right down when needed as well as injecting pace when an attack was on forcing the Foxrock Cabinteely players to foul and run the clock down further. A GAME OF TWO HALVES If ever weather was going to have an influence on a game it would be in one played in the second weekend of December and sure enough this was very much a game where players had to take advantage of the wind when they had it. Right from the off Mourneabbey poured forward in attack scoring within the first 30 seconds. From there they elected to pressure every single one of Aisling Tarpey's kickouts. That Mourneabbey would break even on their oppositions kickouts in the first half tells its own story. They hassled and pressed right up on each kickout and the further Foxrock- Cabinteely players went back to try and pick up short kickouts the less space Tarpey had to find a free player as Mourneabbey markers pushed up on every "The second half followed a similar pattern although with the breeze the Dublin outfit were at least able to get the ball to their inside forward a little more often" 8 // Ladies Gaelic Football Association Aisling Tarpey of Foxrock-Cabinteely
